Tonight, I viewed a screening of "The Future of Food" at the Brattle Theater in Harvard Square. It is a documentary about Genetically Engeneered Organisims, specifically staple crops. It was followed by a Q&A with the director and some others. The film focused heavily on the patent suit filed by Monsanto against a small individual farmer that we read about in class. It was really interesting to see this man on film, and he brought up the fact that these new strains of food, especially the new variety of seeds that are engineered not to replicate, are a serious threat to world food supply. If these crops have a problem later on, and move to less developed agro economies, it could be responsible for a worldwide disaster. Check out the film if you are at all interested, as it will be running at Harvard for another two weeks and is very well done!
