Intellectual Property in Business and Society

NTP, the same patent licensing company that just received a $612.5 million settlement from BlackBerry's parent company Research in Motion (RIM), has decided to sue Palm. NTP has accused RIM of infringing upon seven valuable patents, while Palm claims that NTP is a company that generates profit by misusing the patent system. Palm's executives recently released a statement condemning the plaintiff for extracting "monetary value for patents that may ultimately have no value at all." This lawsuit is a high profile case that has the potential to reverse the current trend in IP enforcement and make it less likely to see large out-of-court settlements.
