Intellectual Property in Business and Society

In response to Jim's post, I think the natural response is that the Rolling Stones should get an extension, because they are still alive. However, they still retain their copyrights in the United States, which is a significant source of revenue. Furthermore, they could still utilize their own work in a creative or new way. If they wanted to make a greatest hits album that included new and old hits, for example, competitors would not be able to copy them exactly because their new songs would be protected by copyright. Also, because of their extreme popularity, I don't believe that people would choose to see imitation or cover bands play their songs instead of them. The only area they would suffer in would be record sales in the UK, which due to the digital downloading age, is probably not their main source of revenue. Plus, if they got an extension, that would completely overturn copyright law in the UK.
